New American signing Chad Haga showed his potential when he finished 10th in yesterday's Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen prologue. The young American is now set up for a high overall result in one of his first stage races for his new team
Chad Haga has raced to a solid 10th place in the opening seven kilometre prologue of the three-day Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen in Belgium. The fast flat course saw average speeds of over and above 50kmh with the stage win going to Geert Joeaar (Cofidis), with Chad just 17 seconds down.
A little further back, Luka Mezgec finished in 39th place at 33 seconds, with Lawson Craddock just three seconds behind him.
Tom Veelers did not start today due to a slight knee problem, with the team choosing to rest him for the upcoming objectives rather than risking further damage.
Coach, Addy Engels said:
“Chad rode a good time trial today, finishing tenth on a course which suits the big powerful riders. Joeaar was quite a way ahead, with the rest of the top-10 separated but very little.
“Luka also did a really good effort, showing some good form for the upcoming days.”
After his effort, Lawson Craddock said:
“It wasn’t my type of course today, being too short and flat. It suited the bigger guys. But it’s good to be here in Belgium in the Spring and it not being wet. I’m looking forward to the next few days.
“The TT bike felt awesome out there, so fast and you can really feel the speed come through when you push on the pedals. It feels great.”
Today’s second stage is another fast stage, but with the Oude Kwaremont and Tiegemberg thrown in to the mix to test the riders.
