After the rest day yesterday, the first mountain top finish of this year's Tour de France was held today in the tenth stage. From Tarbes the riders went 167 kilometers to La Pierre Saint Martin. A final climb over 15.7 kilometers and an average gradient of 7.4% caused a very selective race for the mountain specialists.
Bora-Argon 18 leader Dominik Nerz had to pay the price for the high pace set by Movistar and Sky. Escorted by his support riders, he found his own rhythm and finished the stage in 37th place - 6:28 minutes behind the stage winner Chris Froome (Sky). Froome defended the yellow jersey, Nerz is now 21st in the GC.
"That was the expected hard mountaintop finish after the rest day, where you could see that many riders had problems where you wouldn't have expected it. Dominik did a good race and the team supported him very well. Now we take it from day to day and of course hope that we can do even better,” says Sports Director Enrico Poitschke.
"Emanuel [Buchmann] has been looking forward to the mountains and you could see how strong he is. Together with Bartosz [Huzarski] he was certainly the strongest helper for Dominik today. A great performance he showed us. Of course in the next few days he will get the chance to also try something for himself,” continued Poitschke.
