"This is my biggest victory on the road but nothing is as dear to my heart as my title as French cyclo-cross champion. The most amazing thing today is that FDJ takes podium spots," Mourey says

Francis Mourey (FDJ) took his second victory in less than a month when his FDJ team secured a 1-2-3 in the Tro-Bro Leon. Describing the win as his biggest on the road, the cyclo-cross specialist is, however, still most proud of his national championship title in his favourite discipline.

Cyclo-cross specialist Francis Mourey had not won a road race since his debut season in 2004 when he lined up in the Circuit de la Sarthe earlier this month. However, he managed to break his 9-year drought by taking home the final stage of the French race.

No longer cursed, the FDJ rider managed to take home another great victory in today's Tro-Bro Leon. With plenty of gravel road sectors on the course, the race is known as the Breton Paris-Roubaix and Mourey was able to benefit maximally from his off-road abilities.

The unique nature of the race makes it highly prestigious in France and hence it is not surprise that Mourey regards it as his most beautiful victory on the road. Having taken no less than 7 French cyclo-cross championships, he nonetheless refuses to see it as the biggest accomplishment of his career.

"This is my biggest victory on the road but nothing is as dear to my heart as my title as French cyclo-cross champion. The most amazing thing today is that FDJ takes podium spots," Mourey says

His victory was just the pinnacle of an amazing FDJ performance. Teammates Anthony Geslin and Laurent Pichon had been part of the day's early break and with the move still up the road, Mourey and teammate Johan Le Bon joined a chase group with 50km remaining.

After 25km of hard work, the group managed to join the front and Mourey went straight on the attack. Nobody was able to follow the in-form Frenchman who soloed off to take the victory. Behind Le Bon went off to take the 2nd place while Geslin won the sprint for 3rd to make it an FDJ clean sweep of the podium.

The results come at the end of a very successful period for the French team. Earlier this week, Pierrick Fedrigo and Arnaud Demare won the Paris-Camembert and the GP de Denain, respectively, and yesterday Geslin took another 3rd place in the Tour du Finistere. The team has now taken no less than 6 victories since March 31.

The most amazing thing today is that FDJ takes podium spots," Mourey said. "Everything went as we had hoped for at the briefing this morning. A 1-2-3 makes it a great day for FDJ."

"I managed to save my energy on the gravel roads and to keep a good speed in every corner. With my teammates in the front group, we did not have to chase. As I still felt good, I accelerated just before the final circuit and I knew I could hold it all the way to the finish. My victory in the Circuit de la Sarthe gave me confidence, and after the cyclo-cross season I am well rested physically and mentally."

The French road championships will be held on the same gravel roads as the Tro-Bro Leon this year and thus today's victory makes Mourey hope for more success. A road race championships would fit perfectly into his already great collection of cyclo-cross titles.

"The French championships in June will take place right here," he said. "If I managed to become French champion on the road, I would be very happy but the main goal is that the title remains in the FDJ team. This circuit inspires me. I hope that my haul of tricolor jerseys is not over yet."

Before Mourey will try to take home his national road race title, he will focus on the Giro d'Italia in which he is expected to support Arnold Jenannesson's GC ambtions.
