Andrea Guardini took a record breaking 12th stage win in the Malaysian race. Yesterday he crashed, but that didn't prevent him from winning. Here is more reactions from the third stage of the race:
Duber Quintero (1st in the GC and winner of the first stage):
“My teammates were fantastic and allowed me to keep the jersey for another day”, Quintero said. “The breakaway was insidious, because it featured Matt Brammeier, who was third in the GC. We have handled the situation well and manage to control the break attempt."
"I am normally better on the smaller climbs, but tomorrow will be a big climb to Genting. I will try to maintain this lead. In any case I have a strong team here and we should be aiming to do well in the general classification and tomorrow is the day," said Quintero.
"Among the contenders will be Esteban Chavez of Orica-GreenEDGE and Isaac Bolivar of United Healthcare, but other teams have some very good climbers as well. I will try to compete with them," added the 23-year old Quintero.
Matt Brammeier (2nd in the GC +0.19 and the leader of Point’s classification and KOM competetion):
“I felt pretty good at the start, so I thought I'd give it a go in the breakaway again,” the 28-year-old said. “I managed to slip into the day's break and took some more points in the KOM competition. We played a few games with the chasing group behind and at one point it looked like we could go all the way to the finish. In the end after the last climb the gap wasn't quite big enough so I sat up and waited for the chasing group.”
“I finished the day with a few more points in the KOM and moved up a spot in GC and also took the lead in the points competition. So I am pretty satisfied.”
Tinkoff-Saxo DS Tristan Hoffman whose best rider in the GC is Michael Kolar (16th +1.37):
“The boys supported Michael (Kolar) and tried to put him in a good position for the sprint but he was too far back in the bunch in order to succeed. Tomorrow’s stage over 110 kilometers is the only stage in the race with a mountain top finish leaving the climbers with an all-or-nothing chance to succeed in Langkawi. We take on 20 kilometers of climbing and we’ll support Pawel (Poljanski) and Jesper (Hansen) as this is their territory and their big opportunity.”
Jacques Janse Van Rensburg 12th in the GC +1.33:
“I am very happy with my ride today, it would have been nice to get a result but that’s how cycling goes,” said Janse Van Rensburg. “I have actually been focusing on the Genting stage and was just covering moves this morning but ended up getting into the days break. I was conserving as much energy as possible with tomorrow’s stage in mind but when we hit 20km to go and we still had a 2’40” lead, the UHC rider attacked and I followed him,” Janse Van Rensburg continued.
“We really gave it our best shot but the odds were up against us. Now I am lying 12th on GC which is a good position to be in before Genting so I just have to recover as much as possible to still have a good ride tomorrow,” concluded Janse Van Rensburg.
Katusha DS Viacheslav Ekimov whose best rider in the GC is Pavel Kochetkov (26th +1.37):
"Today we had one more plain stage for the massive sprint. We had the same strategy as in the last two days; we worked for Marco Haller, who was strong yesterday. The team worked perfectly, guys helped Marco to come in front for the sprint. But with a few hundred meters to the finish he found himself boxed by other riders and was forced to stop. Anyway, we will have some more sprinter’s stages ahead, so we will try again."
