The Operacion Puerto case which dates back to 2006, is not over yet. The statute of limitations has passed but according to Spanish newspaper El Pais, new names could be revealed in the coming weeks.
There is no certainty that it will have any sporting consequences even though El Pais explains that the anti-doping laboratory of Lausanne has used the DNA in the blood bags found during the 2006 investigation to identify their owners. About 20 cyclists are reportedly involved.
The Puerto case only officially resulted in a ban for two riders: Ivan Basso and Alejandro Valverde. Many others, like Jan Ullrich, have also been tarnished. At the time of the searches, a list of athletes containing about sixty pseudonyms of athletes was found but the use of these pseudonyms and the Spanish authorities hadprevented further identification.
Initially, it involved several sports, including football and tennis, but only cyclists received bans. Most recently, Thomas Dekker admitted to have been one of the clients of Fuentes and to have figured in the mentioned list under the pseudonym of Clasicomano Luigi.
