The Ag2r – La Mondiale rider Matteo Montaguti clocked a decent result in his second race in the 2014 season, and first on his home soil, as he finished the Trofeo Laigueglia in seventh place. The Italian domestique aims to add the third victory to his palmares as soon as possible while he stays in the country to participate in few more events, before returning to his common duties as a reliable support to Ag2r leaders.
Montaguti, who has claimed his last professional victory in 2010 is very keen to capitalize from a good disposition he has shown in Trofeo Laigueglia and use the rare opportunity to play his own cards and he was provided with more freedom by his French World Tour squad wile racing in Italy.
“I will ride all the Italian races held in the nearest future, even Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo. In April I will participate in Vuelta al Pais Vasco, then the Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege before the Giro d’Italia,” Montaguti outlined his schedule for a first part of the season.
In the age of 30, the Italian cyclist proved to be a capable rider in mountains and he wants to chase more of his own chances as the time slowly passes by. Montaguti acknowledges that he has to take every single chance to shine as very soon he will be forced to return to his normal responsibilities, most likely serving Domenico Pozzovivo during his Giro d’Italia campaign.
He hopes, however, to receive a chance to show off his potential later in the season while riding aggressively in breakaways, what resulted in wearing the jersey of the best climber several times throughout his career.
