The 99th Giro starts in Apeldoorn. It’s the 12th foreign start of the race, in 2002 and 2010 this Grand Tour also began in the Netherlands. The riders will cover an individual time trial of 9.8 km on a course that is completely flat.
Lotto Soudal captain Maxime Monfort shared his thoughts on the stage:
“The Giro starts today with an individual time trial of almost ten kilometres. No doubt the atmosphere here in the Netherlands will be great. This time trial won’t really influence the GC: the difference between a good day and a bad day is maybe ten to fifteen seconds. But mentally it would of course be nice to achieve a decent result. Today it really begins, after the preparation of the past days and weeks.”
