José Mendes got close to his first big professional victory when he finished fifth in yesterday's final mountain stage of the USA Pro Challenge. However, the Portuguese climber came up short against Laurent Didier in the American cold.
Bartosz Huzarski improved to 8th place in the GC on stage five of the USA Pro Challenge, which led the peloton from Woodland Park to Breckenridge. Jose Mendes finished the mountain stage over 186 kilometers on 5th place, being the first chaser of four leading riders. Laurent Didier (Trek Factory Racing) won the stage ahead of Janier Acevedo (Garmin Sharp) and Rob Britton (Team SmartStop). The riders of the stage podium were part of a 12-men break away group that also included Jose Mendes.
“Today was a tough day for the guys. Temperatures went down from 30 degrees yesterday to six degrees today, so all riders had to fight with the cold. Chances were high that a break away group will make it to the finish today, given the gaps in the GC and the stage profile. So we definitely wanted to be part of a bigger break away. Firstly, Tiago [Machado] went clear but his group got caught so it was Jose who jumped into the deciding group and he finished on a very good fifth place. Also, Bartosz rode very well and he could even improve one spot in the GC where he now sits on eighth place”, said a happy Sport Director Alex Sans Vega.
