Mexican high altitude once again proved its worth when it comes to breaking speed records as Australian Anna Meares again demonstrated that she is the queen of track cycling, breaking her own 500m time trial world record.
Meares became the first woman to break 33 seconds limit for the event on Saturday when she made the most of the high altitude at the Mexico World Cup round.
The 30-year-old stopped the clock at 32.836 seconds to diminish her own mark of 33.010, set at last year's world titles in Melbourne.
"I just wanted it. I wanted it really badly," Meares said of her latest world record according to the Guardian.
"It's really weird. It's taken me nearly 10 years to improve just over a second in the discipline. In Athens in 2004, I was 20 years old and became the first women to ride a sub-34 (33.952) and now, 10 years later at 30 years of age, I'm the first to ride a sub-33.”
Meares' gold medal and world record in the 500 at the Athens Olympics confirmed her star status in track cycling.
She was also the last Olympic champion in the event before it was controversially taken off the Games program.
Through her record-breaking performances Meares has sent out a warning signal to her rivals that she is on target for next year's world titles.
Meares enjoyed a 16-month sabbatical from international competition after her historic sprint win over ferocious British rival Victoria Pendleton for the gold medal at the London Olympics but has now come back with a vengeance.
