Rafal Majka did another impressive performance in today's final mountain stage to finish third and secure himself the win in the mountains classification. Having surprised himself in his first Tour, the Pole hopes that this is a sign that he will one day win the world's biggest race.
When Alberto Contador crashed out of the race, it looked like Tinkoff-Saxo would have to leave the race empty-handed. However, Michael Rogers and Rafal Majka turned things around when they won a total of three stages among them.
Today Majka capped it all in the most impressive fashion when he proved that he can also mix it up with the best climbers, taking third in the final mountain stage. The result was enough for him to secure the win in the mountains competition and he now just needs to reach Paris to get the chance to stand on the podium at the end of his first Tour.
"I was feeling tired after the long breakaway yesterday and I attacked early because I wasn't feeling good," he said "It was too early. But I'm still third at the finishing line! I waited for Pinot and two other riders [Van Garderen and Péraud].
"I attacked too early and I waited too much but I'm really happy with two stage wins, twice in the top three in the mountains and the polka jersey. Now the jersey is mine. This is a big surprise for my first Tour de France. Maybe I'll win the Tour de France in the future."
“Rafal did another great stage today and he’s now only a few steps away from the podium in Paris but we still have to do three more stages before we can finally celebrate," manager Bjarne Riis said. "Tomorrow he gets to wear his polka dot pedals as well. He’s done a sensational Tour de France and is probably considered the surprise of the race but I’ve known his potential for quite a while and now it’s unfolding for everyone to see."
