Nikolas Maes is one of five newcomers to the Lotto-Soudal team for 2017. He has spent no less than seven years in the Quick-Step jersey. "Even though I've only been here for a few days, I feel well accepted here," the 30-year Maes tells Sporza.
"I was ready for something new, a new challenge in my career. I have been riding for a few years and needed new motivation. With this team I can find what I was looking for.
"There is great attention to the young riders. I can pass my experience and support them. On the sporting side, I hope to get to a less strict hierarchy in terms of division of labor.
"Of course you should always adhere to the guidelines of the team, but I think I'll get some freedom here and occasionally there will be room for me to try something.
"And finally there is also the Tiesj Benoot factor. The fact that here he is here, has also played a role in my move. We are training buddies and friends. I see a lot of potential in him. I'm really motivated to assist him and give him advice. "
At the time of the interview, Maes had spent five days with the team. His initial impression is very positive.
"It's only a first impression, but I had certain expectations that are even slightly surpassed. I look forward to the new season."
