While there was not much to celebrate for LottoNL-Jumbo in 2015, manager Richard Plugge still has lots of ambitions. "Many people see us as the Rabobank team, yes. But we are now twice as small," he tells AD.
The outcome of 2015 was six victories for LottoNL-Jumbo. It was a disappointing season, despite the good performance of Steven Kruijswijk in the Giro d'Italia and Robert Gesink in the Tour de France. Team boss Richard Plugge puts these results into perspective.
"If one of your leaders, in this case Gesink, is only really something worth in June and another, Laurens ten Dam, breaks his ribs in Catalonia, you know that you're suddenly vulnerable. Look, we no longer have lots of captains. We are no longer the Rabobank team."
"Many people see us as the Rabobank team, yes," Plugge continues. "Let's say we are now twice as small. Of course this has an impact on the quality across the board. We are often compared to Tinkoff and BMC but with our team budget we are just below the average, around teams like the Belgian Lotto Soudak and FDJ."
