The 11th Vuelta stage is historic. Never before, did that many altitude metres have to covered in such a short distance: there are six climbs in 138 kilometres.
The stage winner will definitely be a climber, says Lotto Soudal sports director Frederik Willems:
“Most riders are a bit scared and hope the speed won’t be too high at the start. Guys who can climb well and that are further down on GC might get away from the peloton, like Jurgen Van den Broeck and Maxime Monfort in our team. They already proved what they are capable of in the past. Although I think there’s a big chance that one of the favourites will win the stage.
"At Lotto Soudal Bart De Clercq is our man for GC. Yesterday, on the rest day, we did a recon of the last climb with him, longer climbs are better for him than explosive climbs and he’s in a good condition. In the beginning he just has to be attentive if a big group takes off with guys that aren’t too far behind him on GC.”
