After the opening team time trial, the Tour de Romandie continued with a stage with 4 climbs. In the 168,1 km from Apples to Saint Imier, the riders covered 4 difficult challenges.
It was this last climb that reduced the bunch and 49 riders remained in the front group that battled for the victory in a sprint. LAMPRE-MERIDA was represented by Rui Costa ans Diego Ulissi. The Portuguese tried to launch the sprint for his team mate, but the approach to the sprint was quite difficult, with so many riders that were fighting for the top positions. so the blue-fuchsia-green duo could not stay together. Rui Costa followed a lead-out train that helped him to obtain 5th place behind Albasini, Pantano, Alaphilippe and Haas.
In the overall classification, Rui Costa and Ulissi are 32nd and 33rd at 51 seconds.
It was good performance by Tsgabu Grmay who was in the lead group until the final climb. On the contrary, the stage was unfortunate for Przemyslaw Niemiec who crashed, suffering bruises on the shoulder and on the side but he reached the finish
"Rui and Diego gave us very interesting feedbacks," sports director Philippe Mauduit commented. "Rui's form allowed him to be in the head group without too many problems and he also supported his team mate in the approach to the sprint; Diego is riding better and better day by day and his morale is also improving."
