Peter Kennaugh virtually sealed his overall victory in the Tour of Austria when he finished 19th in today's time trial. The Brit now just has to finish tomorrow's flat stage safely to take his second stage race victory of the year.

Peter Kennaugh moved to within a day of wrapping up the overall victory at the Tour of Austria by finishing the penultimate stage in 19th as Kristof Vandewalle took the win in Podersdorf at Neusiedler See.

Heading into the time trial with a one minute and two second advantage over Javier Moreno (Movistar), Kennaugh rode a smart race to extend that margin by a second going into Sunday’s final stage in Vienna.

The Team Sky rider measured his effort over the pan-flat 24.1-kilometre course to finish in a time of 29 minutes and 13 seconds, putting himself in the box seat for the overall win.

Kristof Vandewalle (Trek Factory Racing) set the early benchmark and the Belgian’s time of 27 minutes and 50 seconds was never bettered. Stage six winner Jesse Sergent finished 12 seconds down on his team-mate in second, while Manuel Quinziato (BMC Racing) rounded out the podium, a further three seconds behind.

Kanstantsin Siutsou rode well to place sixth on the stage as he kicked off his third campaign as Belarusian time trial champion.

"We don't take anything for granted until the finish line has been crossed tomorrow," said Sports Director Dan Frost after the stage.

"At the moment it looks good. The team have a great spirit, Pete is in great form and today he did a really good performance. He had to deal with a lot of wind out on course. A few times he had to grab onto the handlebars because of the gusts, but he did what he had to do against his opponents. He even extended his lead by a second.

"The guys have supported Pete since the first stage. Tomorrow we need to focus and we'll do that until the last lap has finished in Vienna."
