Tanel Kangert and the Astana GC riders Mikel Landa and Fabio Aru got safely through the tricky stage 7 of the Vuelta a Espana. Like lots of other riders, however, they were not too impressed by the roadbook which had indicated the stage to be a lot easier than it actually was.
“On paper the stages look one way but on the road it’s a different story," Tanel Kangert said after stage 7 of the Vuelta a Espana. "Today’s finish had a lot more climbing than anybody expected."
Kangert fell short of the leaders on Thursday’s uphill finish, but recovered overnight to come in with the first group on Friday. The Estonian climber said extreme heat and a strong peloton make each day in this year’s Vuelta much more challenging and competitive.
Saturday should finish in a mass sprint, while Sunday will see major changes in the General Classification as the Vuelta goes high into Spain’s southern mountains. Fabio Aru and Mikel Landa still find themselves racing in a small circle of leaders in the Top-20, and the team is motivated to keep them both at the front.
