Billed as a great talent since his early years when he took numerous victories in the junior and U23 categories, Bob Jungels is becoming a star amom the professionals. In 2016, the Luxembourger turned 24 and had his best season. After a podium finish at Tirreno-Adriatico, the Etixx-Quick Step rider took sixth and was the best young rider at the Giro where he had the honor to wear the pink jersey – a surprise performance from the rider who had shown very little as a grand tour contender.
"It was a great season. I changed team and immediately I won in Oman. The spring was great, “ he told Le Quotidien. “The summer was quieter and we finished in style at the Worlds."
In Qatar, Jungels won gold in the team time trial and took a solid tenth place in the individual race against the clock. But his best memory was in Italy.
"It was the stage where I took the pink jersey ,” he said.” It was the best experience of my career. It's so emotional. "
Now aware of his ability to shine in a Grand Tour, Jungels does not yet know what he will do in 2017.
"I know I'm good over three weeks. Long distances are what I like. I like the Giro, I must admit. The atmosphere is great. At the Tour, there's a lot more stress. And the Vuelta is fine. We have to discuss it but normally it will be the Giro-Vuelta or the Tour only."
However, he mainly has one goal.
"This year I have improved across the board: in time trial, in the high mountains. And all this has allowed me to take the next step. Next season I will have to confirm.”
