Two days of flat stages were replaced by hilly terrain in today’s third stage of the Volta ao Algarve.
A dozen riders managed to break clear of the peloton but never looked likely to maintain their lead, and they were reeled back in with approximately 25 km to go.
Henao made his move on the final climb. To begin with Rui Costa (Movistar Team) and Thiago Machado (RadioShack-Leopard) managed to stick to his wheel, but when Henao accelerated his pace once more, they were unable to follow him.
Henao soloed to victory and the overall lead. Costa took second place while Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil-DCM) came in third.
Manuele Boaro (Team Saxo-Tinkoff) successfully defended his KOM jersey.
