Due to changed racing schedule, Philippe Gilbert improved on his last season’s results in spring classics, leaving memories of the most miserable months of his career behind him. Still, results posted in 2014 couldn’t compete with his annus mirabillis three years ago and Belgian rider acknowledged that it was no different in regards to his appearance in the Vuelta a Espana.
Gilbert used to perform well in the Vuelta, his traditional build-up towards World Championships, and regularly won stages in the event, but it wasn’t a case this year.
“A fifth place was best I could have achieved here,” the BMC rider told L’Equipe.
“It’s not enough, and I know that the team is not satisfied with me. But it doesn’t change anything.”
