For the twenty-fifth time in its history, the municipality of Gijón is expected to host a stage finish of the Vuelta next season.
According to La Nueva España, an agreement was reached between the organizer Unipublic and the elected officials of Asturias. Despite the twenty-four stages previous finishes in the capital of the Costa Verde, we must go back to 2003 to find the last finish in the Spanish city. At the time, ONCE took advantage of a team time trial to take a victory. A year before, Russian Serguei Smetanine took a solo win in the streets of Gijón.
Big names such as Bernard Hinault, Jacques Anquetil, Erik Zabel and Eddy Planckaert have also raised their arms in the Asturian city.
