Team Giant-Alpecin ranked 17th on the opening team time trial at the Giro d’Italia, 49″ behind the winning team Orica-GreenEDGE.
With not too many corners and technical sections the team completed the 17.6km relatively flat course around Sanremo (IT) in 20’15”, sufficient for a 17th place in the stage ranking.
Team Orica-GreenEdge was the winning formation with an impressive average speed of almost 54.5Km/H. Simon Gerrans (AUS) will be the first to wear pink.
After the team passed the finish, Coach Addy Engels said: “We rode a solid time trial. With this discipline it is always difficult to decide the strategy in advance. You have to go full gas and then see who is strong and who isn’t. Important for now is that we all came out well ahead of the important stage of tomorrow.”
