Vicente Garcia de Mateos went from nothing to the first professional victory after outsprinting Samuel Caldeira (W52-Quinta da Lixa) and Davide Vigano (Team Idea 2010 ASD) on the first stage of Volta a Portugal. Gaetan Bille kept the yellow jersey despite Garcia’s win.
The Spanish Louletano - Ray Just Energy rider delivered an outstanding and strong sprint to be the first rider on the line on the second day of the Portuguese race. A decisive move which earned him the first ever win.
Very excited and almost not capable of believing the facts, he gave this reaction to Portuguese RTP after the stage:
“This is a very important win for the team, which we couldn’t have dreamed of before the race. For me personally, it is the biggest win of my career. I cannot ask for more so early in the race,” he told RTP after the stage.
It is the third victory this season for the Louletano team; All of them are obtained in home races in Portugal.
