Tomorrow's stage to the top of the Col du Galibier has been heavily threatened by bad weather and most of the day different rumours have been circulating, the most drastic suggesting a cancellation of the entire stage. However, the Valloire Prefecture has changed its stance at the last minute and the stage will now go ahead almost as planned with only the final 4,25km from the top of the Galibier to be skipped.
When the Giro d'Italia route was presented in October, one of the stages to receive most attention was the 15th which was scheduled to finish at the top of the mighty Col du Galibier in France at more than 2600m of altitude to commemorate the exploits of Marco Pantani in the 1998 Tour de France. However, the bad weather that forced organizers RCS to cancel the climb to Sestriere in today's stage had threatened the big battle and at one point rumours suggested that it would be entirely cancelled.
However, the Valloire Prefecture has now allowed Giro organizers to go on almost as planned and the only change to the original course will be that the final 4,25km to the top will be skipped. That will certainly be a relief for the many cycling fans around the world that had looked forward to this stage for months.
The stage was originally scheduled to start at 12.30 but that has now be postponed to 13.00. The organizers will follow the situation closely overnight and could change their plans if conditions deteriorate unexpectedly.
Starting at 12.45 you can follow the stage in its entirety on CyclingQuotes.com/live.
