"Full-on racing all day, super hard. I was gone twice, Rein twice and Grivko in a good move at the end, but on the last climb we couldn't catch the guys who went away."
Those were the words of Astana's Jakob Fuglsang after the one-day World Tour Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal. Fuglsang, Rein Taaramäe and Andrei Grivko all attacked the peloton repeatedly during the 17-lap hilly circuit race, in spite of heavy rain in the last half of the day.
In the final two laps a group of 25 elite riders broke free, with Alexey Lutsenko, Tanel Kangert and Fuglsang from Astana Pro Team all in to work in expectation of a group sprint. On the final climb, a 500m ascent near a hospital followed by a tricky downhill in the rain, Tim Wellens of Belgium escaped with one other rider and held the chasing group with Fuglsang and his teammates to win the race by 2 seconds.
