Jakob Fuglsang was once again forced to face a criticism for choosing to ride for Astana, due to the latest findings about doping within the squad. Turning down all negative comments, the 29-year old Dane insisted that despite a currently difficult situation at the Kazakh team, there are no basis to consider them less trustworthy than Tinkoff-Saxo – until recently considered a safe haven for all Danish professionals.
“I can, to some extent, understand people who doubt my choice of teams,” he told Danish broadcaster TV2. “I would like to know which team you can trust. I would not trust all of Tinkoff-Saxo. There is a less nice past that I would not trust.”
Even though the 29-year old Dane didn’t manage to improve on his promising results from 2013 this season, he claims to be satisfied with a chances received at Astana.
“When I went to Astana, I looked at what I could get out of them... I had opportunities at Astana,” he explained.
Once again Fuglsang emphasized that he has nothing to do with using banned methods and substances. He suggested, however, that riders interested in illegally boosting their performances will do so regardless of a team they’re riding for.
“I know what I stand for. I do not want anything to do with doping, and I am strongly opposed to doping. That I stand by. I know I can go fast without it. If there is someone who wants to cheat, it will be so. But then I hope they get caught, and I think also that they will sooner or later.”
