When Chris Froome won this year's Tour de France, he received almost as much attention for his riding style as he did for his results. In an interview with Euronews, the Brit admits that his style is different from most other climbers but claims that he has more power when he stays in the saddle.

Chris Froome completely dominated this year's Tour de France by crushing his rivals both in the mountains and on the time trials. The Brit took the second consecutive Sky win in the world's biggest bike race when he stepped onto the podium in Paris in the 100th edition of the race.

While nobody could question Froome's strength, he drew much attention for his unorthodox riding style. While most other climbers often stand in the pedals, Froome tends to sit in the saddle with his elbows and knees sticking out. In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this month, he stated that he hoped to improve his style to be more aerodynamic but he now admits that he is simply different from most of his rivals.

‘‘It’s not a strategy, it is just the way I am," he told Euronews. "I think I feel most comfortable like, I have the most power, if I just hold the bike and stay in the saddle. I do stand up, but not as much as some of the other pure climbers.’‘

Froome is one of the most versatile stage race riders in recent years. He is not only an outstanding climber, he almost beat Tony Martin in the first flat time trial of this year's Tour and won the final one on a much hillier course.

Froome sees his all-round abilities as his main strength.

‘‘I am predominantly a climber but time trial is also something that I can do well in and I can take a lot of time from my rivals, so I think generally I am a good stage racer, good in the mountains and good in the time trials," he said.

Froome has made it clear that he wants to win the Tour de France as many times as possible. Next year, he will do fewer races but the French grand tour will once again be the centrepiece of his year.

In the interview with Euronews, he repeated his intention to go back to the Tour next year.

‘‘Next year, again, I would like to target the Tour de France," he said. "For me this year winning the Tour has given me so much motivation, it has given me the passion I know I can win it. I know that I have the ability to go there and to be one of the big contenders in the Tour de France. So why change all that, I think it would make a lot of sense to me to go back there and try and repeat what I did there this year.’‘
