Seeing that the escaped riders were not very numerous, the Caja Rural-Seguros RGA team chose to save its energy and search for its options to win in the final part of the stage. Omar Fraile and Amets Txurruka led the peloton in the finale in the aim to catch up to those who had broken away. However, there was no luck and they did not obtain the desired results.
Omar Fraile, leader of the King of the Mountain classification, felt “good. We worked hard in that final part in order to be well-positioned, once we were close to the escape, the road was wide and we decided to save our strength as it was also very hot. The team worked well and I’m sure that, at any moment, those good results will come.
"Today was rather quiet, apart from the heat. It's too early to make the polka-dot an objective so I helped the team in our other goals. We worked to prepare a sprint for Carlos Barbero. We knew from the start that we would be on the podium with the polka-dot jersey so the team opted for the stage win option with Barbero rather than go in the breakaway.
