The Portuguese rider, Ricardo Vilela, (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) was one of the main players by being present in the day’s escape along with Kadri (AG2R La Mondiale), Rollin (Cofidis), Ramírez (Colombia), Maes (Etixx-Quick Step), Berhane (MTN-Qhubeka), Rolland (Europcar), Tjallingii (Lotto NL-Jumbo) and Zubeldia (Trek Factory) in stage 15 of the Vuelta a Espana.
“I felt well, I tried to be in the escape, but it didn’t go as planned," Vilela said. "But we have to be happy with the team’s visibility. The peloton was in control from the back and they didn’t let us get ahead, the leaders were interested in the bonus seconds and it’s a shame. There are still a few stages to go and I’ll continue to try to find my opportunity.”
Omar Fraile is still in the lead of the King of the Mountain classification and faces stage 16 as a key stage to defend his jersey. A special climb, a 1st category climb, three 2nd category climbs and two 3rd category climbs could well determine the jersey’s future.
"The stage started at a strong pace," Fraile said. "Once the breakaway went, we took a break before the amazing finale. I felt good. I seem to have recovered from the cold.
"Tomorrow's stage is good for me, I will try to be in front. The jersey is mine until I lose it, so I'll fight until the end."
