Two weeks ago many recreational cyclists participated in the Sporza cycling trip to Mojacar (Spain). Ex-rider Serge Baguet was present. Last year the former Tour de France stage winner received bad news. A year later Baguet is hopeful about his recovery.
Exactly one year ago Serge Baguet had to deal with severe abdominal pain at the Sporza cycling trip. After several examinations, the diagnosis showed that he suffered from cancer
"All indications are that I'm on the right track," Baguet told Sporza in Spain. "The chemo has a good effect.
For Baguet, who won a Tour stage in 2001 and became Belgian champion in 2005, the illness was a mental blow.
"I have done sport at the highest level," Baguet explained. "Suddenly you are put on the plane in a wheelchair, while everyone is watching. That hurts your pride.
"At the hospital I had to re-learn how to walk with a walker. An ex-athlete with a walker: That hurts."
Serge Baguet is now back on the road. "My past as an athlete helped me. In my career I have also had a lot of adversity. It was difficult to handle, but you know that everything is okay. I have to stay calm."
Baguet is also active on his mountain bike. "I've always liked that," said Baguet.
"It is not competition at the highest level. To finish will be a success in the first races. But I needed something to pull me out of the pit. This has helped me tremendously."
