Second in Coppa Bernocchi, Mauro Finetto (Southeast) has been a perennial contender in the one-day races this week. Today he was again in the mix in Memorial Marco Pantani.
"As always, I missed very little today," he told CyclingPro.net. "We were twenty in front and there were constant attacks. At one point they started to look at us since we were three [including teammates Fedi and Gavazzi]. I launched a few attacks and then had a bad moment. I saw Nibali leaving, I was a fifty meters behind him and I said, "Gasparotto or Bardiani have to close", but unfortunately they did not. In a moment he made a gap so I found myself starting the climb with a delay of thirty seconds. I went stronger from bottom to the top, trying to keep a little group with me and then have a hand in the descent, but they went really strong in front. Later when tI was with and Marcato and we had a minute and forty, I understood that we would have get back.
"I could be in front of them. Surely I would have had it difficult but I would still be there to have a battle with them. Just remember that in the penultimate lap, Visconti went very strong, but I still had a lot of margin. I was really good, but as always I missed that moment and remained behind.
"Tomorrow I'll try again because I'm fine, hoping not to make another mistake like today."
