It was a fantastic day for the Portuguese team W52-Quinta da Lixa in Volta a Portugal. Not only has defending champion Gustavo Cesar Veloso obtained the yellow jersey in the race, the team also took the stage win today.
The fastest man on the last category 1 climb was another Spaniard Delio Fernandez, who saw the opportunity to take his first ever professional win. He went away from the small group containing him, Jose Goncalves (Caja Rural) and team leader Gustavo Cesar Veloso.
As it seemed to be no more danger on the line for the team leader, the helping rider was allowed to ride his own chances, which turned out to be the successful tactic. The happy stage winner has made this statement:
"The idea was not to lose time in general and be near Gustavo (Veloso). He saw my opportunity to attack in the final part and I took it. It was a great satisfaction to win, I am very happy for myself and for the team," said Delio Fernandez according to Esciclismo.
