Italian Elia Viviani (Team Sky) won the second stage of the Giro d'Italia on a day that was marred by crashes. The FDJ team was not directly affected by these incident and the leaders all finished in the first peloton.
"It was nervous," said a sports director Martial Gayant who was delighted that his riders did not hit the deck inthe crash with 13km to go.
"Due to the incident, the peloton split in three and the two first groups merged five kilometers from the finish. Alexandre Géniez, Kevin Reza, Kenny Elissonde and Francis Mourey finished in the first group. However, the tumble was costly for the IAM team that only had one rider in this group and AG2R-La Mondiale whose leader Pozzovivo lost over a minute. "
All is well so for the FDJ team before the next two stages that connect Liguria and Tuscany and will take place on winding, hilly roads.
"The only concern is that Jussi Veikkanen was suffering before the Giro and he is still struggling even if he is very brave. I hope he will recover with the help of doctor Gérard Guillaume and get throught the next few stages."
