The Eneco Tour entered classics terrain after three stages for sprinters and one time trial. In fact, the 5th stage was characterized by a series of hills and was accompanied by heavy rain.
The wet weather weakened the ambition of LAMPRE-MERIDA for a top result in the overall classification or for a stage victory. In fact no blue-fuchsia-riders stayed in the front part of the race when the battle became intense and the rain caused some crashes.
The rain did not discourage the fighting duo of Le Bon and Van Baarle, who attacked from the bunch and led the race for most of the race and succeded in keepting the bunch at bay, also because the peloton was broken into several parts when the pace was raised with 25 km to go.
No team could organize a chase, so Le Bon and Van Baarle could battle for the victory which was obtained by Le Bon.
LAMPRE-MERIDA was supporting Ulissi in order to approach the hills in the final part of the stage in a good position but the blue-fuchsia-green riders found themselves behind after some crashes caused by the wet road had split the peloton: Pozzato crashed without consequences while Ulissi went off the road in order to avoid some riders who were on the ground.
