Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) won the second stage of Tirreno-Adriatico after an exciting race. Thibaut Pinot perfectly negotiated the tricky finale with the outstanding support of his teammates, taking another important step in building his confidence.
"It was stressful , says FDJ sports director Yvon Madiot. "It was fast, there was fight for position, it was dangerous on small roads with a finish in the town of Arezzo where there was a gate and a narrow road with cobbles. I did not see Thibaut all day. He was well placed by his teammates who do a great job in taking care of him. He is still in a good position. Anyway, in this type of finish, he will never be a contender."
Pinot had to do the final climb and a very winding descent six times. At the finish line, Pinot figured well in the first 60-rider peloton alongside Yoann Offredo and Steve Morabito.
"The team has given everything," Madiot says. "I really have to be pleased with the troops. The guys are professional and serious. It is true that when the leader is good, it is easier. Tomorrow the real fun begins with the double 4km climb in the finale and it has an average gradient of 9% average. This is probably not long enough for Thibaut but it's still hard."
