“I never thought I would finish third in a sprint behind these two champions. It was a long day in the rain, and made very difficult by the weather conditions.  But I am very happy with this result.”

The rain and cold came to play havoc in time for the stage that was already not lacking in difficulties. Between Mataró and Olot, the peloton made its winding way over the mountainous roads of Catalonia.  Too difficult of a day to allow the pure sprinters to figure, this second stage saw Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) cut the ribbon, crossing the finishing line first.  Right behind him was IAM Cycling’s Martin Elmiger who was indestructible throughout the stage, and took a third place with panache.

Having just crossed the finish line, still shivering from the cold and with a mud-streaked face from the harsh conditions of the day, the Swiss Champion could hardly believe his own performance.

“I never thought I would finish third in a sprint behind these two champions,” Elmiger admitted.  “It was a long day in the rain, and made very difficult by the weather conditions.  But I am very happy with this result.”

However difficult the stage was for Martin Elmiger, it was even tougher on the sprinters in the pack who struggled to take part in the final run to the line.

“The last two ascents made the stage even more difficult for the sprinters,” Elmiger confirmed.  “The cold already didn’t help any of us; it took a lot out of us, so it was pretty hard for everyone.  For me, the legs were going very well today, and I know when I am well placed, I am able to win.  But I also know that there were other strong riders in front of me.  Sometimes you’re not missing much, so I am very happy with this third place today.”

Mario Chiesa also shared Martin Elmiger’s enthusiasm upon his arrival.

“At the end, I thought he could win,” the Italian directeur spotif said.  “But with the cold, it can be like that.  We had four riders from the team in the front group, so I am happy.

"Matteo Pelucchi was detached seven kilometers from the finish, but he fought well, even though this type of finish was just too tough for a rider like him.  So I am also very happy with his efforts.

"I just spoke with Martin and he said he was a bit too far back in the last 600 meters, so he had to start his sprint from way out.  He may have just been missing a little speed.  But honestly, I am very satisfied.”
