Boris Dron from the small Wallonie team almost denied all the professionals on the first stage of Tour du Gevaudan. Being part of a strong breakaway trio in the finale, he seemed to have launched the perfect attack but hard work by Amets Txurruka brought him back, setting Thomas Degand up for the win.
Going into the Tour du Gevaudan, all the focus was on the professional teams and stars like Thibaut Pinot and Alexandre Geniez. In the end, however, the first stage was nearly won by Boris Dron from the small Wallonie team.
"I hadn't really planned to go on the attack from the beginning," he told Directvelo. "I wanted to anticipate the first climb but after having gone away with Pierre-Luc Périchon (Bretagne), we were brought back. Then the race was pretty disorganized and we had a general regrouping. I stayed quiet until the Amets Txurruka and Thomas Degand attacked. They took off just before the final descent. Then we were down to three. Since I did not know how fast they were in a sprint, I attacked at the start of the final false flat. Unfortunately, Amets Txurruka did an effort to bring me back.
"Anyway, I am satisfied with my performance, I have already finished 4th in the first stage of the Etoile de Bessèges.Initially, the goal was not th GC. I do not know anything about the Laurent Jalabert climb [which features in stage 2]. Anyway, I'll try to do my best tomorrow."
