Having recongnised the success and renewed enthusiasm for the hour record, Cannondale rider Joe Dombrowski wants to introduce a new record that suits him better. The American is not a good time triallist, but rather a good climber, and has suggested to make his own hour record for climbers.
The American believes that climbers are also entitled to have their challenge even though the concept is still unclear. The plan is to measure the total elevation gain after an hour.
“I thought it would be cool if we created an uphill hour record, outdoors. It’s how many meters you can climb in an hour," he told Velonews.
The challenge will be more strategic than the hour record on the track where the weather plays no role. The climbers have to find a regular climb with gradients that are suitable to the characteristics of the rider and also have to take the wind conditions into consideration. They need to find a climb which takes more than an hour to climb.
Dombrowski has not chosen the climb for his own attempt but is considering the Stelvio in Italy or the climb in Tenerife.
