The Dutch Derny driver Cees Stam is back home. In late October, the 69-year-old suffered from cardiac arrhythmia and was hit by another derny at the Six-Days of Amsterdam. "It will take a while before he's fully recovered," said his son and former rider Danny Stam. "He will never again ride a derny."
Danny's father and grandfather of Yoeri Havik, who won the race, broke some ribs and suffereda brain contusion and for a long time he was in critical condition in hospital.
"When he was in a coma 2.5 weeks ago and was taken out of the respirator, you knew it was going in the right direction," his son told Sporza. "He was already fairly stable. Fortunately he returned home.
"After he came out of the coma, we were still afraid of brain damage. Initially, he was a bit confused."
That no longer seems to be the case.
"It will take a while before he's fully recovered. In any case, he will never ride a derny again."
