BMC went into the opening team time trial of the Vuelta a Espana as one of the favourites but could only manage 9th. One of team's specialists Rohan Dennis described the course as one for lead-out men and not the usual powerhouses.
The BMC Racing Team finished ninth in the team time trial that opened the Vuelta a España Saturday. On a 12.9-kilometer course made technical by a number of roundabouts, the BMC Racing Team piloted its bikes to a time of 14:34, 21 seconds slower than winner Movistar Team. Cannondale Pro Cycling was second and ORICA-GreenEDGE was third, both six seconds off the winning time.
BMC Racing Team Sport Director Valerio Piva said a slow start cost the squad a better place.
"We lost 14 seconds in the first part of the parcours," Piva said. "Our second part was much better."
“It was not a horsepower kind of thing," Rohan Dennis said. "This race was for lead out men, not for climbers. That’s why Cannondale did so well. We’re fine with our performance.”
The second stage of the three-week race is a 174.4-kilometer road race.
