LottoNL-Jumbo has now also become involved in the doping case related to doctor Chris Mertens. After Greg Van Avermaet was named as a client last Saturday, Kevin De Weert’s name has now also popped up.
Since the start of the year, De Weert has been riding for the Dutch team and he has reportedly been Mertens’ client during his time at QuickStep (2009-2014).
“Since I was asked by the court, I have contributed to the investigation,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws yesterday. “Since then I have heard nothing.”
De Weert is one of the 24 customers that are suspected of doping. The doctor has reportedly used ozone injections to help the athletes recover faster. On March 13, Van Avermaet is set to appear before the Belgian Cycling Federation and De Weert could also be asked to explain his case. If that’s the case, his participation in Tirreno-Adriatico (March 11-17) will be at risk.
