Yesterday David De La Cruz crashed out of the Tour de France in spectacular fashion. Having spent a painful night, the Spaniard still doesn't know what brought him down.
David de la Cruz crashed on stage 12 of the Tour de France, going from Bourg-en-Bresse to Saint-Etienne. De la Cruz who was part of a five-men lead group at the time of his crash, went down in a corner with 94 kilometers to go. The 25-years old Spaniard broke his collarbone. De la Cruz was brought to the hospital in Villefranche-sur-Seine, accompanied by the team. He doesn’t need a surgery on his broken collarbone. David de la Cruz spent the night in the team hotel.
"Now, I feel better after a long night even though it wasn’t possible to sleep," he said. "I slept only for one hour because of the pain and also because I had so many thoughts in my head. But c’est Le Tour. I did my best preparation and I was in really good shape. Unfortunately the good luck that you need as a cyclist wasn’t with me in this race. The better days will come again.
"To tell the truth, I don’t know what happened. This night, I spent a lot of time seeing the video of the crash. Honestly, I don’t understand it because I didn’t take the corner too fast and I didn’t brake. The bike just went away and I crashed. And I felt right in that moment the collarbone broke. I don’t know the reason, maybe the road was a little bit hot and soft but I really don’t know.
"The doctors told me, that in two weeks the collarbone will be OK again. So, I hope that I can start training on the Tacx in one week and on the road in two and a half week already. I want to be in good shape for the tours that are planned from mid August on. But now my priority is to make sure that I don’t need surgery. The doctors in the hospital yesterday told me that I don’t need it but I’ll now take a second and third opinion on it at home."
