Within the Trek Factory Racing team, Danny (22 years old) and Boy Van Poppel (27) are currently competing at the Vuelta a Espana. The younger brother has proved he is fit. Trek Factory Racing team decided to bet on him in the sprint finishes.
"It's very special to compete a three-week race with his brother," Danny van Poppel said according to NOS. His brother adds. "We share a lot together, but racing the Vuelta is quite another thing for us. About my shape, I hope I will know better days. I feel feverish and tired. I am being treated with antibiotics."
Van Poppel is one of the few sprinters present in this 70th edition. "I took the start of the Vuelta with a lot of confidence. I am fit and I will do everything to win a stage. I showed that I can compete with the best sprinters on the World Tour races. There will be not many opportunities, we must be fit for D-Day."
Regarding their future in the peloton, Danny van Poppel said: "We can not say anything at the moment, you will know more in the coming weeks." It has been remoured that these two riders will leave the Trek Factory Racing team.
In addition to this statement, Trek confirmed the arrival of sprinters Edward Theuns (Topsport Vlaaderen) and Niccolo Bonfiazio (Lampre Merida).
