Roy Curvers raced to 5th from the breakaway at Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen. Michal Golas won the race after initial winner Jens Debusschere was disqualified.
The 100th anniversary edition of the Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen took place today in Koolskamp, Belgium. The one-day race consisted of 16 laps on a relatively flat circuit of 12km with a cobblestone section in it, for a race total of 192km.
After a fast start 4 riders got away to form the early break, but didn’t get too much space, as the sprinters’ teams controlled in the bunch. With 5 circuits to go Team Giant-Alpecin took the initiative to close the gap and at 2,5 lap to the finish a new breakaway group of 9 riders, including Roy Curvers, got clear to survive until the finish.
After some attempts to break away Roy initially sprinted to 6th but moved up one position to 5th place after initial winner Jens Debusschere (Lotto Soudal) got disqualified. Michal Golas (Etixx – Quick Step) won the race. Max Walscheid sprinted to 12th.
After the race, coach Marc Reef said:
“We tried to be in the large breakaway groups and after one hour of racing, four riders got away, without us. Trek Factory Racing and Lotto Soudal controlled and with five laps to go we decided to close the gap. A phase with a lot of attacks followed and eventually Roy got away with eight other riders.
“The group stayed ahead of a chasing bunch and raced for the win. Roy attacked twice but didn’t succeed and took 5th in the sprint. After a good lead-out, our stagiaire Max Walscheid sprinted among the first in the bunch sprint for the 10th place.”
