The 25th edition of the Challenge Mallorca will include two races for sprinters and two races for climbers

The organizers of the 25th edition of Playa de Palma Mallorca Challenge, an series of one-day races from January 28-31, have announced the route for the four events.

 

Like last year the series will include two races for sprinters and two races for climbers. The opening race will be for the fast finishers and was won by Matteo Pelucchi in 2015. One day later the climbers will show themselves in a race that was won by Steve Cummings 12 months ago.

 

Saturday is the day of the hardest race which was dominated by a very strong Alejandro Valverde in 2015. The series will end with the traditional criterium in the main city of Palma which has usually opened the event. For the second year in a row, the flat circuit will be used on the final day when Pelucchi will try to defend his title.

 

Thursday, January 28. Trofeo Felanitx-Ses Salines-Campos-Porreres 174km

Two new citites will be visited for for the first time in the race's 25th anniversary. Felanitx is the birthplace of Guillermo Timoner who is a six-time world champion in track cycling and has 13 Spanish titles on his palmaes. Porreres IS THE hometown of Joan Llaneras who has won gold medals at the World Championships and the Olympics.

 

Friday, January 29. Trofeo Pollença - Andratx 162.6km 

This year the Trofeo Pollenca will use the opposite direction compact to recent editions. Pollença is one of the most beautiful areas in the north of the island where it combines the sea and mountains. Meanwhile, Andratx is the origin of the Serra de Tramuntana.

 

Saturday, January 30: Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana-Soller-Deia 143.9km

Due to its toughness, the distance of this race has been reduced. Serra de Tramuntana has been declared World Heritage for its amazing landscapes. Deià has become a tourist enclave.

 

Sunday 31 January: Trofeo Playa de Palma, 161.5km

A few variations in the final 30km have been introduced but the race is still finishing on the same circuit to the delight of the fans. Like last year the Palma circuit will be used on the final day of the challenge.

 

There will be 20 teams at the start: Movistar Team, Team Sky, Lotto Soudal, IAM Cycling, FDJ, Team Dimension Data, Etixx-Quickstep, Trek and Cannondale-Garmin from the WorldTour; Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, Cofidis Credits Solutions, Bora-Argon 18, Rusvelo and Roth Skoda from the Professional Continental category; Burgos BH, Murias-Taldea, GM Bike Cycling Team and Aid from the Continental category and Spanish and British national teams.
