On the final descent of today’s stage at the Critérium du Dauphiné Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel) Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) broke clear from the leading group and established a 20 seconds lead at the foot of the last climb of the day while Alberto Contador (Saxo-Tinkoff) acted as a domestique for his team mate Michael Rogers and dictated the pace in the group.
The two escapees held on to their lead, however, and Sánchez was the first to cross the finish line
Alberto Contador spent the last parts of the day acting as a super domestique for his team mate, Michael Rogers, who moved up to third overall.
“I only thought about my team mate Michael Rogers today,” Contador said afterwards. “My physical condition is perfect and form-wise I’m where I want to be and it means a lot to me that I can give something back to my team mates who always work hard for me and today I had the opportunity to pay back Michael. The goal was to get Michael on the podium and we succeeded in doing that. Everything is going according to plan and now I am confident that I will be at 100 % when the Tour de France begins. I have a good feeling and I feel comfortable on the climbs. Reportedly we’ll have rain on tomorrow’s stage which should favour me."
Chris Froome (Sky) still leads the Critérium du Dauphiné ahead of tomorrow’s final stage while Contador is in 10th place, 2’56” behind Froome.
