"We tried to work together, but it didn’t come together as well as we’d like. The past two days I’ve felt good and was hoping for a little luck in the finish.”

Wednesday’s Stage 4 of the Tour of California began at the picturesque Pismo Beach Pier. The 173.1-kilometer stage featured three intermediate sprints and one categorized climb. One kilometer from the day’s first sprint, four riders attacked. They gained a maximum gap of 3:35 before getting caught 10 km before the race finish in Avila Beach. While Daniel Oss (BMC Racing Team) attacked inside the final kilometers, he was caught on the uphill finish by a chasing peloton. Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) won his first stage of the race after finishing runner-up for three consecutive days. Andrea Peron was Team Novo Nordisk’s best-placed rider in 29th position.

“Martijn [Verschoor] and I tried to stay together from the 30km mark,” Peron said. “With the final few turns and the uphill finish, things got a little confusing and crazy. We tried to work together, but it didn’t come together as well as we’d like. The past two days I’ve felt good and was hoping for a little luck in the finish.”

Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) sprinted to the win ahead of Wouter Wippert (Drapac Professional Cycling) and Mark Cavendish (Etixx-Quick Step). Toms Skujins (Hincapie Racing Team) remains the overall race leader.

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, continues racing at the Amgen Tour of California on Thursday with Stage 5. The 154-km stage begins in Santa Barbara and features four categorized climbs before an uphill run into Santa Clarita.
