After yesterday’s absence at Memorial Pantani due to a flu attack, Sonny Colbrelli confirmed a really good shape in the GP Industria e Commercio di Prato (Prato – Prato, 185.8km). This bodes well for the Road World Championships in Richmond where he has been selected in the Italian National Team.
In today’s one-day race, there was also the positive performance by Barbin (7th yesterday at the Memorial Pantani) and Bongiorno who were authors of a big effort trying to catch the 5 riders that pulled away with 45km to go and held off the peloton from which Colbrelli won the sprint.
"I leave today's race both with disappointment and a half-satisfaction because until recently I was in bed with fever of 38 degrees," he told Spaziociclismo. "Today I gritted my teeth, my legs were fine even though I have to recover.
"I want to be at the Words. Before I was sick, I definitely had great legs as we have seen in Bernocchi and Agostoni. I hope that these days will serve to recover so I can be there on Sunday."
”We missed the victory but all our guys made a solid performance today. Sonny proved to be completely recovered from the flu of the last days. I know him very well and from today until next Sunday when the World Championships will be held, I’m sure that his condition will continue to grow and I hope that the Italian coach Cassani will select him in the 9-rider team that will race. Today he won the sprint easily behind the five escapees, narrowly missing the double after last year's success,” Mirko Rossato said.
