Robinso Chalapud emerged as the new national road race champion of Colombia, after winning an exciting sprint against Daniel Jaramillo (Jamis Hagens) and Jeffry Romero (Lottery Boyacá). The rider who is the star signing of the Antioquia team after a few years in Europe with Colombia-Coldeportes, celebrated his win against the best riders of the country who helped give the victory more prestige.
At the finish the unexpected happened: Nairo Quintana punctured and caused a crash. A few managed to get clear, including Chalapud, who managed to take the win. His celebration was one of joyful relief. "I have always dreamed about this. Last year I wanted to ride but my coach (Claudio Corti of Team Colombia) would not let me. This year Antioquia welcomed me and has relied heavily on me," he said.
"It's something big because Uran, Nairo were here. I rode against them and to beat them has a special touch," he said. He added, "my coach (Gabriel Jaime Velez) told me to keep an eye on Nairo and 'Rigo' and that's what I did. I felt good and I was able to finish it off."
In addition to the medal and jersey, Chalapud got a Wolfswagen Jeta and an Amelissa Tablet.
