The second stage of Dubai Tour was set to be a fight between Marcel Kittel and Mark Cavendish. Both Giant Shimano and Omega Pharma - Quickstep tried to position their sprinter in the best possible position ahead of the final kilometre, but Mark Cavendish was boxed in and finished 30th. Team-mate Mark Renshaw was best OPQS man, as he finished 17th.
Mark Cavendish says that the stage was very nervous. The wind wasn’t strong enough to break it though. He praises the team for riding as one unit and for fighting for a good position, even though the result wasn’t satisfying. The team will try once again on tomorrow’s stage.
"It was a nervous stage, the wind wasn't strong enough to break it," Cavendish said to the OPQS webpage. "Everyone was nervous because it was the first stage and only a short stage. We did a good of staying in the front. The team rode well as a unit, and it was a good final. We fought and had good position. But then we just got swamped in the last 2km. At 300m to go I was in 15th position, so the best I can get from that is about 8th position. But, we're trying every day."
