In the U23 ranks, Mattia Cattaneo had great battles with Fabio Aru. Since turning professional, however, the Lampre-Merida youngster has been unable to match his friend but he hopes to reach the Astana rider's level in 2015.
It is vacation time and time to make new schedules for the riders. That also goes for Lampre-Merida's Mattia Cattaneo. The 24-year-old won the Baby Giro in 2011 but due to various physical problems he has not yet been able to deliver the best in the highest category like his friend Fabio Aru with whom he shared successes in the amateur ranks. During the next two years when he will still be riding in blue-fuchsia-green, he expects to rediscover his best legs.
"I am satisfied with my season," he told Tuttobiciweb. "The middle part with the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de Suisse went well. The Tour de Pologne was good too so I cannot compain. Unfortunately, after the team time trial world I had to give up Il Lombardia due to a small kidney stone that I din't want to neglect. Last Monday it was removed. Now I will take a little rest with my family and girlfriend and then get back to work.
"I hope to do well in one-week stage races like the Tour de Suisse and other races of this type and in the same category. I am happy to have renewed with Lampre. I want to repay the trust given to me by Copeland, Saronni and the whole team.
"He [Aru] has achieved important results, I give him my compliments. Especially last year, I suffered from physical problems and I can say that I have lost a season but now I am back and very motivated. Fabio has reached a very high level. I hope to get there as soon as possible."
